Letter To My Future Self

Dear Future Me,

If you're reading this, it means a full year has passed since I stopped long enough to write honestly—to myself—about where EcoClean Guardians began to feel real, fragile, powerful, and unfinished all at once.

Today, I am standing in the in-between.

EcoClean Guardians exists—not as an idea anymore, but as a living organization with real people, real funding, real expectations, and real stakes. I've done the unglamorous work: the legal setup, the budgets, the policies, the grant applications, the decks, the follow-ups, the waiting. I've said "no" to shortcuts and "yes" to building something that lasts. I've carried this mostly on belief, discipline, and a deep sense that litter isn't just trash—it's a visible symptom of neglect, inequity, and disengagement.

Right now, I feel both proud and tired. Confident and uncertain. Energized by momentum, yet aware that nothing is guaranteed.

What I want to build is bigger than clean streets and waterways.

I want EcoClean Guardians to be proof that environmental work can be paid, dignified, and local—that community members don't need to volunteer their labor to show pride in where they live. I want systems that municipalities trust, data that funders respect, and work that participants feel proud to show their families. I want this organization to outgrow me without losing its soul.

I want a model that scales responsibly—one that blends human labor, smart technology, and clear accountability. I want EcoClean Guardians to be known not just for cleaning up litter, but for changing how people think about who does this work and why it matters.

Most of all, I want to build something that still feels aligned—something I don't have to defend internally to keep going.

What I'm committing to try next—even if it's uncomfortable:

  • I am committing to asking bigger, clearer asks—without apologizing for ambition.
  • I am committing to protecting my energy as seriously as I protect the mission.
  • I am committing to delegation, even when it's slower at first.
  • I am committing to visibility, even when it feels vulnerable.
  • I am committing to rest without guilt, and progress without perfection.
  • I am committing to trusting that building thoughtfully is not the same as moving slowly.

If you're reading this a year from now, I hope a few things are true:

  • I hope you've grown—not just in scale, but in steadiness.
  • I hope you're leading more than carrying.
  • I hope EcoClean Guardians feels less fragile and more inevitable.
  • I hope you still remember why this started—and that you still care deeply.

And if things didn't unfold exactly as planned, I hope you're proud anyway—because this version of you chose integrity over urgency, courage over comfort, and purpose over ease.

Whatever today looks like for you now, remember this:

You started something meaningful.

You didn't cut corners.

You showed up when it would've been easier not to.

That counts—more than you probably give yourself credit for.

With resolve,
Carolyn

It's Our First Year Anniversary!

A year ago this month, EcoClean Guardians launched with a simple idea: pay local residents to protect the places they live, and treat environmental stewardship as real, professional work instead of a once-a-year volunteer event. Twelve months later, that idea has become a trained workforce showing up on waterfronts, streets, and neighborhood corridors — rain or shine, week after week.

We wanted this September newsletter to pause on that milestone, because a year of consistent, unglamorous work is exactly the kind of impact that's easy to overlook and worth celebrating.

Why This Anniversary Matters

Most environmental efforts are measured in single events — a weekend, a holiday cleanup, a headline moment. Ours is measured in a year of routes completed, storm drains cleared, and paychecks earned by people cleaning up their own communities. That consistency is the whole point. A single cleanup makes a neighborhood look better for a day; a year of them changes what a neighborhood can rely on.

It also means we're heading into our second fall season with a full year of experience behind us — including everything we've learned about clearing leaf-and-litter buildup from storm drains before hurricane-season rain turns a manageable job into an emergency one.

A Professional Workforce Protecting Our Communities

EcoClean Guardians has never been a volunteer organization, and one year in, that distinction matters more than ever. We are a trained environmental workforce that provides dependable, measurable, and consistent stewardship throughout the communities we serve.

Over the past year, our Eco-Earners have focused on:

  • Clearing leaf-and-litter buildup from storm drains ahead of seasonal rainfall.
  • Protecting waterfront and riverside stretches where debris collects fastest.
  • Sweeping neighborhood streets and corridors as foot traffic shifts with the seasons.
  • Operating safely through every kind of weather, from summer heat to fall storms.

Professional stewardship means consistency, not guesswork — the same reliable coverage, week after week, season after season, for a full year and counting.

Every Eco-Earner is also a local resident earning meaningful income while protecting the community they call home. One year of paychecks, training, and real employment is proof that environmental restoration and workforce development can grow together — and it's made possible through partnerships with municipalities, sponsors, and funders who believed in this model from the start.

A Year, By the Numbers

Our reporting includes:

  • Total pounds/tons of litter removed
  • Bags of debris collected
  • Cleanup routes completed
  • Participant work hours logged
  • Before-and-after photo documentation
  • Geographic coverage areas
  • Public reports shared with municipalities, sponsors, and funding partners

In our first year, EcoClean Guardians engaged hundreds of paid participants and removed nearly 5 tons of litter from communities across the region (season started April 2026), while building partnerships that continue to expand our impact. We believe accountability is just as important as action — this year proved it can also be sustained.

Two Powerful Weekends: Two Cities, Two Cleanups, One Mission

We showed what community-powered environmental work can accomplish when people step up with heart, grit, and pride.

Hoboken City · Gateway Walk: Paterson Plank Regional Cleanup (August 16th)

We wrapped up Gateway Walk along Paterson Plank Road in Hoboken, a Severe Impact corridor marked by chronic dumping, commercial overflow, and hazard zones. Under partly cloudy 79°F skies, our team delivered:

15Participants
420Lbs removed
42Bags collected
4.6Miles covered
$1,800Paid to residents
134.62Lbs per mile

Huge thanks to The Courage Project, 4imprint one-by-one, and Hoboken DPW for supporting this activation.

Elmwood Park · Lose a Ton Cleanup (August 9th)

In 103° heat, 24 Elmwood Park residents showed up ready to work and take care of their town. Their impact:

24Participants
1,420Lbs removed
74Bags filled
6.3Miles covered
$2,785Paid to residents
225.4Lbs per mile

After clearing the marina, a group of ducks waddled right up to us like they were inspecting the fresh shoreline. Two locals stopped me to say, "Thank you for what you do; it's needed."

We met several strong Elmwood Park workers who want to join future EcoClean Guardians cleanups, exactly how community stewardship grows.

If you want to learn more about what we do or become an Eco-Earner, visit our site and join the movement.

Impact Snapshot

Our teams and Eco-Earners have been busy preventing pollution before it starts.

Every storm drain cleared is one less flood risk. Every piece of trash intercepted is one less item drifting into the Hudson, Passaic, Delaware, or Long Island Sound. And every Eco-Earner who shows up reminds us that environmental courage is contagious.

How You Can Help

Every sponsored cleanup directly supports:

  • Paid employment opportunities for local Eco-Earners
  • Professional-grade cleanup equipment and safety gear
  • Storm drain protection efforts
  • Micro-trash and debris removal
  • Ongoing environmental safety training
  • Route planning and operational support
  • Transparent reporting and measurable results

Your investment creates cleaner neighborhoods, healthier waterways, meaningful employment, and stronger communities — and helps carry this model into year two.

Become a Sponsor or Partner

If you've ever looked at a river, lake, or bay and thought, "Someone should really do something about that," congratulations, you're exactly the kind of partner we love.

EcoClean Guardians is actively seeking municipal partners, corporate sponsors, and community organizations that want to make a measurable, visible, and genuinely meaningful impact on local waterways and litter cleanups.

Why partner with us?

  • Support a program that intercepts pollution before it becomes a problem
  • Receive real data, real reporting, and real impact snapshots
  • Protect the waterways your residents, customers, and employees rely on
  • Join a regional movement toward cleaner, safer, healthier communities

And yes, you'll also get recognition, visibility, and bragging rights.

Whether you're a town looking to reduce flooding, a business wanting to give back, or an organization committed to environmental stewardship, we'd love to talk.

Building Stronger Communities Together

One year has shown us that thriving communities don't happen by accident. They're built through consistent stewardship, dedicated partnerships, and residents who care enough to protect the places they call home — over and over, one weekend at a time.

At EcoClean Guardians, we believe environmental protection is more than picking up litter. It's about safeguarding neighborhoods, strengthening local economies, and proving, one year at a time, that this work can last.

Because the strongest communities aren't simply the cleanest; they're the ones protected by dedicated Guardians — this year, and every year after.
