Every month, we get a front row seat to the courage, creativity, and community spirit that keep our mission moving. Whether it's Eco-Earners pulling debris from storm drains, families showing up to waterfront cleanups, or municipal partners asking, "Okay, what can we tackle next?", we're reminded that protecting our environment isn't a solo act, it's a team sport.

And let's be honest: our region gives us plenty of material. One day, we're rescuing a plastic bottle doing laps in the Passaic River, the next we're pulling a Styrofoam chunk out of a storm drain that looks suspiciously like it tried to become modern art.

But every piece removed is a win, and every person who joins us makes that win bigger. This month, we're excited to share updates and give you a closer look at the Water Guardian program we're preparing to launch. Clean water is a shared responsibility, and we're grateful to have you in this fight with us.

If you've ever stood near a river after a storm, whether it's the Passaic, the Hudson, the Delaware, or the Connecticut River, you've probably seen it: plastic bottles floating by like they're on vacation, food wrappers doing synchronized swimming, and occasional mystery object drifting downstream with suspicious confidence.

It would almost be funny… if it weren't our water. Across New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania, waterways are carrying a burden they never asked for, and the numbers prove it.

Every year, statewide cleanups across the four states collect millions of pieces of litter, much of it pulled directly from rivers, lakes, bays, and storm drain corridors.

Here's what the data shows:

• New Jersey: Over 500,000 pieces of trash are collected annually from waterways and storm drains.
• New York: Hudson River cleanups routinely remove tens of thousands of pounds of debris each year.
• Connecticut: Coastal cleanups report over 30,000 pieces of shoreline trash annually, much of it storm drain driven.
• Pennsylvania: The Delaware River Basin sees hundreds of pounds of floating debris after major rainfall events.

And the most common offenders? Plastic bottles, food wrappers, styrofoam fragments, cigarette butts, and single use bags that seem determined to live forever. During heavy storms, clogged storm drains in all four states push debris directly into waterways, contributing to significant localized flooding, a problem every resident in the region has complained about at least once.

EcoClean Guardians haven't deployed the Water Guardian yet, but the need across NJ, NY, CT, and PA is loud, clear, and floating right in front of us. The Water Guardian is a zero emission cleanup machine focused on intercepting trash before it becomes pollution. Think of it as a regional superhero squad, but instead of capes, it has a trash-collecting device, data tools, and a deep love for clean water.

Once launched, Water Guardian will:

• Patrol rivers, lakes, ponds, and waterfronts
• Remove floating trash using zero emission equipment
• Provide same day impact reports showing exactly what was collected
• Help towns reduce flooding, protect wildlife, and improve water quality

Even though the Water Guardian hasn't hit the water yet, our teams and Eco-Earners have been busy preventing pollution before it starts.

Every storm drain cleared is one less flood risk. Every piece of trash intercepted is one less item drifting into the Hudson, Passaic, Delaware, or Long Island Sound. And every Eco-Earner who shows up reminds us that environmental courage is contagious.
